Profiling

When you're asking for money from people, it's faster to profile. I've got it down to a system. Ask if they have kids, but don't ask if they're frustrated. Ask if they have a full cart of food, but don't if they're digging in their purse for coupons. Ask if they're wearing functional footwear, but don't ask if they're in a hurry. Never ask Asian people or teenagers. Rarely ask the elderly. Men are more likely to donate than women.

I was handing out hot pink vouchers at Cub this morning. The food shelf is really low on meat this time of year, and we were asking for a five dollar donation to buy 2.5 lbs of ground beef for a family. They would take the slip of paper I handed them to the cashier who would add it to their bill. Easy, simple, and a relatively decent turnout.

We also had a fishbowl on the side for cash donations. This one woman with a deep-set wrinkles and a frown came up and dropped $10 into it before I could even greet her. Then she smiled and it completely changed her face. She walked away without saying anything.

Kare 11 came at one point to interview ICA. I'll be on the 6 o'clock news, if anyone watches it.
