The Belt

There is much we could be doing
if it were not for our predisposed notions,
our ideas of ‘should’
and ‘should not,’
that propel us at a hundred miles per hour
to some floating island
where we slumber
in the happy hammocks of conformity
rocking to the drone and buzz of emptiness.

We depart
from our own wills and wishes
as we clamber upon the conveyor belt
to the assured Paradise
that will make us happy people.
And along the belt
they will give us stiff handshakes
and nod in eerie unison.

There is much we could be doing
if we strip ourselves of ill-fitting harnesses
and give ourselves the opportunity
to be our own kind of happy.
